Summary

Beloved journalist and sportswriter Will Leitch makes his fiction debut with this novel, as suspenseful as it is moving, the story of a young man suffering from a debilitating disease who believes he has witnessed the kidnapping of a young college student。 Daniel leads a rich life in the university town of Athens, Georgia。 He's got a couple close friends, a steady paycheck working for a regional airline, and of course, for a few glorious days each Fall, college football tailgates。 He considers himself to be a mostly lucky guy--despite the fact that he's suffered from a horrible illness since he was a small child, one that has left him unable to speak or to move without a wheelchair。

Largely confined to his home, Daniel spends the hours he's not online communicating with irate air travelers observing his neighborhood from his front porch。 One young woman passes by so frequently that spotting her out the window has almost become part of his daily routine。 Until the day he's almost sure he sees her being kidnapped。

How Lucky is the unforgettable story of a fiercely resilient young man grappling with a physical disability, and his efforts to solve a mystery unfolding right outside his door。

This book is a gem。 The plot is a wild ride, but it has some strikingly honest observations on life and mortality that give it more depth than I was expecting! Also, as a former resident of Athens, Georgia, I adored the setting。 The book captures the feel of “Saturday in Athens” very well。 Loved, loved, loved this book!

I loved this book。 It was not on my radar until I saw it as an option in my Book of the Month club。 The premise sounded interesting so I tried it。 The author’s voice (as filtered through main character Daniel) sounded a lot like my husband。 I enjoyed visiting Daniel’s world in this book。It’s heartwarming, laugh out loud funny and genuinely suspenseful。 A rare combination!

I could not put this book down! Sure, wanting to find the missing girl was part of the drive。 But I also loved Daniel’s voice, optimism, and wit。 His positive attitude was contagious, and I felt happy while immersed in this world。 I didn’t want it to end!On the surface, this is a textbook cozy mystery - no one we care about dies and justice prevails。 It’s also a story of true friendship and a commentary on the treatment of the disabled。 The story is adapted from Rear Window with an additional la I could not put this book down! This is one of my favorite BOTM picks from this year。 It was a quick read but truly engaging。 I love the world building (and how all of it was inspired by Athens GA。) This gave me major Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time vibes。 Daniel is a wonderful character and although Leitch is able bodied, you can tell the care and soul he put into this portrayal of SMA。 Recommending this one!

Fresh, fast paced。

This is such a unique book。 It is a mystery but also a book that opens your eyes to the ableist society we live in through the eyes of an individual with SMA。 Highly recommend the read, as it is eye opening for many reasons。

Such a great book and a hero with SMA is awesome! I love how the book showcases Daniels brain while still allowing his physical challenges to be present and seen as both strength and weakness。 Plus, the criminal aspect is cool too and showing a persons first attempt at crime is interesting。 Definitely a must read!

“You don’t owe anyone anything。 They help you because they love you。 Why else does anyone help anyone? Letting someone help you is the nicest thing you can do for anyone。”I told her she was probably right, and she laughed and said, “I’m always right, Daniel, don’t you know that by now?”I haven’t read another book like this。 I really enjoyed Daniel’s humor and the fact it takes place in Georgia。

This book is incredible。 When I first saw it on BOTM’s website I was a bit worried about how the disability aspect would be portrayed but was pleasantly surprised。 I wish I could go back and read it for the first time again。 The characters were rich and well written。 I hope to see a novel from Leitch in the future!

This book made me sad, made me smile, made me mad and made me chuckle。 Loved the little messages that were sprinkled throughout the book about love and acceptance。

I wasn’t sure what to expect, and I picked this for my book of the month pick just because nothing else really grabbed my interest。 But wow, was this a winner。 Daniel’s character is so well-written, and Leitch does such a good job of keeping you in suspense, while also giving you heartwarming moments and getting little inspirational bits of truth。 One of the best books I’ve read in a long time。

I have never read anything quite like How Lucky, but I am so glad that I did! It is one of the best fictional portrayals of disability that I have read outside of Lisa Genova's novels (which are also VERY different in tone)。 It acknowledges Daniel's disability and does not shy away from the struggles that he faces, but it also doesn't paint Daniel as some sort of disabled savior。 Disability is a big part of Daniel's life, but it is not his entire life。 As a speech-language pathologist, I loved the portrayals of Daniel using his electronic talker, and just how LONG it takes to use these devices (but also how important they are!)。 I thought that the ending was a little bit unrealistic, and the story felt a bit disjointed in some parts, but overall, I highly recommend giving this one a try。 。。。more

I am fan of Will Leitch's work, especially his baseball work。 Writing a novel like this had to be kind of a left turn for him。 This book is about a man (Daniel) in his twenties who has been living with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) for his entire life。 This is a progressive disease。 He is the sole narrator in this book。 In his current state, he is wheelchair-bound, is able to control very few parts of his body and the only way he can communicate is through his iPad。 Daniel witnesses the apparent I am fan of Will Leitch's work, especially his baseball work。 Writing a novel like this had to be kind of a left turn for him。 This book is about a man (Daniel) in his twenties who has been living with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) for his entire life。 This is a progressive disease。 He is the sole narrator in this book。 In his current state, he is wheelchair-bound, is able to control very few parts of his body and the only way he can communicate is through his iPad。 Daniel witnesses the apparent kidnapping of a young, female Asian college student from his porch one morning。 The rest of the book is about Daniel's efforts to figure out what happened to the now-missing Asian woman。The author created a sensational character is Daniel。 He is inspiring。 Instead of brooding about his problems, he is instead thankful for the life he has。 When people try to show pity toward him, he dismisses those thoughts by pointing out that all people have problems and all people, not just him with his SMA, have challenges that need to be coped with。 What stops this from being a 5-star book is the plot。 It is a little too simple and straightforward。 The conclusion lacks surprise and is pretty abrupt。The book is well worth reading, to learn how to approach life better by seeing how Daniel makes teh most of his limited resources。 。。。more
